Interviewing-the-Top-3-Winners-of-The-Best-Email-Design-Hunt-2017-

THE BEST EMAIL DESIGN HUNT 2017

Contest to Appreciate the Best Creative Mind behind an Email – This was the essence behind organizing the first-of-its-kind global email design contest.

And true to its spirit, we along with the whole email fraternity are happy and honored to see (and discover) some of the most beautiful emails conveying their brand’s message with absolute creative brilliance.

Every email entry that made to the Contest Gallery was amazingly creative, but we have the top 3 winners and this time they had the slight edge over others.

I’m sure you want to meet them and know the story behind their email. Many Congratulations to them and Thank You for sharing their story with us all.

WINNER – Sarah Magnone

Company Name: Tough Mudder

Hey Sarah, tell us about yourself.

Sarah: Creative visionary & designer living in Brooklyn. I spend my days designing on a comfy couch at TMHQ (Tough Mudder headquarters). Coffee is my fuel for developing creative strategies & doughnuts are the magic to my dope designs. While I’m not working, I’m getting my zen on in a yoga class somewhere.

Tell us something about your winning email design at THE BEST EMAIL DESIGN HUNT 2017.

Sarah: The email was created for our New Year’s Resolution campaign, which revolved around the idea of doing something for the ‘first time’. We built this concept using play on words and sexual innuendos to describe first time experiences leading with the shocking result of actually doing a Tough Mudder for the first time.

The idea of the iPhone conversation was a way to spark interest from a realistic point of view, but to also market our promotion going on.

Why did you choose this email as your Contest entry?

Sarah: With a strong and humorous concept, this email was chosen since it was the most entertaining and creative email approach the brand has taken. The messaging fit perfectly within our funny and irreverent tone. I just thought it was an email unlike any other.

How important was it to win The Best Email Design Hunt 2017 for you? And now that you are the Winner of a global contest, how does it feel?

Sarah: The feel of winning a GLOBAL contest are all there – surprised, excited, and super smiley. I haven’t won any contests in a while so this definitely feels well-deserved. I really appreciate the recognition for all the hard work my team and I put into making this a great email! There were so many amazing other designs that we will definitely be referencing for inspo moving forward.

1st RUNNER-UP – Robin Sprang

Company Name: OMG/Brainshuffle

Hey Robin, tell us about yourself.

Robin: I’m Robin, 28 years young, always happy, always in for a challenge, perfectionist, from Amsterdam, E-mail lover and all-around interweb designer.

Tell us something about your winning email design at THE BEST EMAIL DESIGN HUNT 2017 & why did you choose this email as your Contest entry?

Robin: We’re always having trouble convincing our clients to choose email. They just don’t understand/know about all the possibilities. The techniques I used in my design are not that innovative but for our clients they are. I wanted to do a little show-off and impress them to convince them that email can be attractive and make an impact in the receiver’s inbox.

How important was it to win The Best Email Design Hunt 2017 for you? And now that you are the Winner of a global contest, how does it feel?

Robin: At OMG, I always said we’re doing something special. People just don’t know enough about it. Being a part of the contest was a great way to convince, internal and external, everyone. Being part of Uplers’ contest was even better because I see you as one of the leading e-mail developers.

2nd RUNNER-UP – Gülben Karaoglu (with Ricardo Marin)

Company Name: Salesforce

Hey Gülben, tell us about you and your teammate.

Gülben: I originally hail from Istanbul and have been a developer for 17 years. Ricardo grew up outside of Oakland and has been a visual designer for about 10 years. However, we are a fearsome email duo and we’ve only recently combined our geek-powered might in designing and developing emails at Salesforce. We share a passion for comic books, cheap lunches and stickers.

Tell us something about your winning email design at THE BEST EMAIL DESIGN HUNT 2017 & why did you choose this email as your Contest entry?

Gülben: This email is built on a thoroughly A-B tested “z-layout” framework. It uses beautiful artwork from Salesforce’s massive annual conference Dreamforce and incorporates CSS visual enhancements (such as box shadow and animation). Best of all, the entire email is coded using the latest accessibility standards in mind.

How important was it to win The Best Email Design Hunt 2017 for you? And now that you are the Winner of a global contest, how does it feel?

Gülben: It always feels good to be recognized by colleagues for hard work, but it feels even better getting that recognition from others who work in email and understand how real the struggle is. So, getting recognized for our design validates our efforts and encourages us to continue to build beautiful, functional and accessible emails. We were thrilled when we were in the top ten so winning a slot in the top-three feels amazing!
